Artistic Perspectives

Thu Nov 1, 2007, 11:58 PM
I didn't know when I started to use this site that these things I write about would become important to me.

Quality of Art vs. The Subject at Hand.
Wandering around this site, I realize that there is an overwhelming majority that looks at the art presented from the perspective of 'The Subject'. I don't see as many people that look at the 'Quality' of the art.
My easiest example is if I drew a portrait at my level, one of a beautiful female, like Jessica Alba, and then I choose a male, Orlando Bloom. And I draw them both excellently, Jessica Alba would recieve more praise and more congratulations for a job well done. Orlando would only get passing praises, if anything. And as an artist, if I only choose to draw Orlando, I would be less popular than if I only drew Alba. Is there then a line of irony?
I've seen photographs a plenty with a great deal of quality and skill. Of course, T&A seem to get more popularity points as if we have this site for other perogatives.
It is disappointing, mostly because I came to this site seeking artists with an artistic eye. My only, silent, independent battle is if I see an artist of good quality, I will find the best in the Gallery that fits my 'subject' need as well as 'quality of art'.
I wonder if as many others would have such a clear line between 'Quality' and the 'Subject'.

Emotive pictures vs. Emo pictures.
Emotive is meant to suggest a feeling, and not tell you the emotion through definition. It is an intent. When you see an old woman whose face is overwhelmed by her hard life and the horrors she has seen, she is not telling you to feel sad--you see it, you feel it. Emotive pictures evoke feelings, emotions deep within. They give an expression of depth and meaning.
Emo is a musical choice and, also now, a social choice. It is a look, a type of clothing, a way of hair and personality. If I dress emo and take a picture, that is not emotive. If I am sad, dressed in emo, and shedding tears in my picture, that is a great deal more emotive.
Most of the 'emotive' pictures I've seen that are only 'emo' seem to lack a depth of emotion, and a lack of understanding of just what is truly emotional. I've known the rage to kill another, I've stood at the foot of the grave of the first person to ever hold me, I have felt my lover in my arms cradled, and also seen that love walk away.
Comparing emo to emotive would be comparing a cup of water to the Pacific Ocean.
You can't.
